If you're shopping for individual pastels for my workshop, here's my suggestion. Basically, what I'd like you to have is dark, middle tone, and light variations of the colors in the color wheel. Just make sure your darks are so dark they're almost black, and your lights are so light, they're almost white.

These colors are not exact because computer monitors are calibrated differently.
